To start the process of identifying South Africa's Superbrands, we first of all compiled a data base of more than 3,000 of the most popular brands operating in the country. These ranged from FMCG brands through to large corporations who are brands in their own right.

Around 1,200 of these were passed to the Superbrands Council, who then graded them using criteria supplied by Superbrands. Only the top 20% of the brands considered were then invited to join the project and enjoy Superbrands status.

Of these, only the first 100 or so brands that confirm their desire to participate in the project will be officially recognised as South Africa's Superbrands for the year 2005.

Details of the criteria used during the grading process are available in the overview page of this site.
